Rumicucho is an ancestral site built by the Kitu-Kara culture during the Integration Period 800 A .D. The 600m. length, 150m. width and 25m. high monument is considered by our actual indigenous communities as one of the treasures of the Reino de Quito which was hidden to be protected against the spaniards during the conquest in the sixteenth century. Recently, in the middle of the twentieth century it was discovered. Rumicucho's special purpose is for astronomy. Twice a year during the equinoxes (September 23 & March 21) the sun is straight on the equator and its shadow disappears at noon, spiritual leaders of the communities keep their traditions by preparing a ceremony to receive the energy of Taita Inti (father sun) by lighting the sacred fire in commemoration planting and harvesting time. Ceremonies are also celebrated on solstices (June 21 & December 22 )
